Abstract

Introduction. The author of the article eliminates and analyzes modernistic features (psychology, lyric current, philosophical etc.) in I. Nechui-Levytsky’s literary works («Over the Black Sea», «Among Enemies»), outlines typological parallels with modernistic worksby MykhailoKotsiubynsky, Olga Kobylianska, LesiaUkrainka, notes ambivalent character of story «Without Mind». Purpose is to study modernistic poetical features in IvanNechui-Levytsky’s literary discourse. Methods. The typological, contact, biographical and analytical methods are more or less realized in the article. Results. In particular, the story of I. Nechui-Levytsky’s»Over the Black Sea» is characterized by the manifestation of psychology inherent in the modern writing, painting by word similar to the manner of MykhailoKotsiubynsky(this refers to the harmonious well-being of nature and man, nature as means of disclosing of the psychological state of heroes).Marinistic motives and feministic tendencies(realization of the modernistic concept of strong, active personality namely woman)are expressive in the literary work. Nervousness and mental instability of both heroines is one more moment that relates analyzed literary workwith modern. Heroines of the story «Over the Black Sea» feel a personal disorder, anxiety, deprivation of liberty, tend to be useful for mankindand serve to «society». The image of teacher named Victor Komashka combines antinomy features such as modernistic (nervous and anxious character) and populist (ideological position) ones. On the background of Victor Komashka’svitaistic feelings»living»reverberation of cultures, polylogof nations, views and ideas are articulated and thus populist dogma of closeness, «blockage» and exceptional Ukrainianity collapses.Single modernistic elements of the story «Over the Black Sea» (the symptoms of neurosisrevealing, personalitysplit of heroes’ self-being; a strong psychological fluent; comprehension of lovesense as psychic force) can be impulses to the psychoanalyticstudy pointing evolution of I. Nechui-Levytsky’sideological and literary directions. Voluntarist idea is the argument of the movement to the modernism. PaterArtemiusas one of the main characters of the story «Among Enemies» in contrast to Father Vasily («Pupa» by MykhailoKotsiubynsky) doesn’t smoke and abuse alcoholic beverages but also has a nervous temper, tendency to scandals, anger and even aggression, doesn’t escape the sloppy tongue. The researcher emphasizes the genre definition of the story «Without Mind» as «a parody of decadence and symbolism in writing»(I. Nechui-Levytsky). Modernistic motives of insanity, nervousness, suicide, protest against the patriarchal system, Europeanism, cosmopolitanism, voluntarism, manifestations of lyricism, aesthetics, mythologism, decadence, symbolism are denied here. Originality. The attempt to eliminate and analyze modernistic features in I. Nechui-Levytsky’s literary works («Over the Black Sea», «Among Enemies»), outline typological parallels with modernistic works by MykhailoKotsiubynsky, Olga Kobylianska, LesiaUkrainka is realized in the article. The ambivalent character of story «Without Mind» is also determined. The author inclines to think that the Ukrainian realism had lyric, romantic and psychological features. Conclusion. The researcher persuades that Ukrainian realism didn’t exist in absolute, classic form, so it acquired lyric, romantic and psychological features, at the late state it was revealed in close and organic connections with early modernism. These opinions are confirmed by the material of I. Nechui-Levytsky’s literary works.
